Close up of a textured exterior wall coating

Superior exterior painting on a house in Bude, with a nice customer review!

We have a very diverse working week, repairing and painting all kinds of properties around the country, and this villa was located on Cornwall’s north coast, in Bude,

We had a lovely letter from the owners afterwards, which we have posted at the bottom of this page.

Let’s have a brief look at what we did.

Most homes in coastal areas need far more weather protection than a house in a landlocked town, and this building near to the sea was no exception.

It was in fairly good condition although we did find flaking paint and some cracks, a common problem in homes in exposed locations, this being on the stormy Atlantic coast.

This is what we started with, which if you can see past the scaffold, was not in too bad condition

Because even the “after” photos were covered in scaffolding, there is not too much we can really say about the place or even show you, but the property had the full never paint again wall coating treatment.

Which means that all necessary repairs were carried out, in this case, removal of old and flaky paint, fixing of various cracks around the house, and a small amount of repair to hollow areas of render.

Whenever we do an exterior wall coating job, the prep work, the repairs, are by far the most important aspect of the whole job and are what takes up the majority of our time on site.

What happens once all repairs are done?

Once we have carried out all the repairs needed, we then mask up the doors and windows, and of course lay dust sheets over the floor to alleviate any potential mess.

We then apply a primer coating by hand all over the walls of the house and then allow to dry.

The next thing we do is the most fun part.

We mix up several batches of Wethertex MP44 exterior textured masonry coating and prime the spraying machine ready for action.

We then spray the exterior coating onto the walls, we don’t use a brush or roller like you would with conventional painting.

This means that the paint coating going onto the wall is TWENTY TIMES AS THICK as masonry paint, giving superior weather protection, whilst also looking fabulous.

If weatherproofing was so important, what is the typical weather in Bude actually like?

Bude, Cornwall, in the United Kingdom, experiences a temperate maritime climate influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Here are some general characteristics of the weather in Bude:

  1. Temperature:
    • Winters: Mild with temperatures rarely falling below freezing. Average winter temperatures range from 4°C to 8°C (39°F to 46°F).
    • Summers: Cool to mild, with average temperatures ranging from 13°C to 19°C (55°F to 66°F).
  2. Rainfall:
    • Bude receives a moderate amount of rainfall throughout the year.
    • The wettest months are usually during the autumn and early winter (October to December).
  3. Wind:
    • Coastal areas like Bude may experience strong winds, particularly during storms that can come in from the Atlantic.
  4. Sunshine:
    • Cornwall, in general, receives a good amount of sunshine, especially during the summer months.
  5. Seasonal variations:
    • The climate is relatively mild compared to other parts of the UK, and extreme temperatures are rare.

It’s important to note that weather conditions can vary from year to year, and occasional storms or unusual weather patterns can occur.

Why is having a house weather protected so important if living on the coast?

Weatherproofing the exterior of your house, especially if you live near the sea, is crucial for several reasons:

  1. Salt Exposure:
    • Coastal areas are prone to high levels of salt in the air due to sea spray. Salt can be corrosive and can lead to the deterioration of building materials, including metals, wood, and concrete. Weatherproofing helps create a barrier against salt exposure, protecting your home from corrosion and decay.
  2. Moisture Protection:
    • Proximity to the sea often means higher humidity levels and increased exposure to rain and storms. Weatherproofing measures, such as sealing gaps, using waterproof materials, and applying protective coatings, help prevent moisture penetration. Moisture can lead to mold growth, rot, and structural damage over time.
  3. Wind Resistance:
    • Coastal areas are susceptible to strong winds, especially during storms. Weatherproofing measures enhance the structural integrity of your home, making it more resistant to wind damage. This includes ensuring that windows, doors, and roof structures are securely sealed to prevent wind-driven rain from entering.
  4. UV Radiation Protection:
  5. Temperature Extremes:
    • Coastal areas often experience more moderate temperatures than inland regions. However, weather conditions near the sea can still be extreme during storms or cold fronts. Proper weatherproofing helps regulate indoor temperatures, preventing drafts and ensuring that your home remains comfortable and energy-efficient.
  6. Long-Term Durability:
    • The cumulative effect of salt, moisture, wind, and sunlight can accelerate wear and tear on buildings in coastal areas. Weatherproofing measures contribute to the long-term durability of your home, reducing the frequency of maintenance and repair work and extending the lifespan of building materials.
  7. Insurance Requirements:
    • In some coastal areas, insurance providers may require homeowners to take specific weatherproofing measures to mitigate the risks associated with coastal living. Failure to comply with these requirements could affect your ability to obtain or maintain insurance coverage.

In summary, weatherproofing is essential for protecting your home from the unique challenges posed by coastal environments.

It helps maintain the structural integrity of your house, ensures the longevity of building materials, and contributes to the overall comfort and safety of your living space.

The owners of this house now do not need to be bothered with the hassle of finding a good local painter and decorator, or a builder, as the exterior of the house is not only weather protected, the paint finish will look as good as it does for the next 20 years, and that comes with a guarantee.
