large house from afar with new paint job on the exterior walls

Repainting a grand house in Northumberland with a durable, weatherproof wall coating

The owners of this imposing property in Alnwick, Northumberland, were concerned about the dire state of their exterior walls, made worse each year by the inclement weather in the area.

They knew that simple masonry painting was not the answer so they turned to us to refurbish and beautify the exterior of this imposing property.

The big problem with owning a large house is the maintenance.

Painting a house of this size every other year would not only amount to a lot of hassle and inconvenience, but a fair bit of money would be lost in keeping it pristine.

That is where the Never Paint Again exterior wall coating system comes in. Once applied, it lasts for over 20 years and does not fade, crack, chip or peel, and that comes with a 20 year guarantee.

Here is what we did to refurbish and paint the exterior walls of this house.

The big difference between masonry painting and having a wall coating on a house is it’s weather resistance, something exterior wall coatings are very good at, but paint is not.

Weatherproofing is of vital importance to protect your home, your largest asset, and the rain, wind and cold can all take a toll on the very fabric of your home, so we are going to focus on the weatherproofing properties that can be achieved with an exterior wall coating.

The house had a dull, grey painted tyrolean finish.

It was such an imposing property that something had to be done to brighten up the walls.

This type of exterior wall finish is known for cracking as it is not flexible.

It has poor weather resistance too, plus let’s be honest, it doesn’t look great does it?

Why do tyrolean wall coatings crack?

First off, we’ve got the age-old nemesis of coatings: movement. Our houses, like us after a big meal, expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity.

These shifts can put stress on the coating, causing those little cracks to appear. It’s like the walls are trying to do the cha-cha, but the coating’s doing the robot. We need them to groove together!

Then there’s the matter of application. If your coating isn’t applied evenly or if it’s too thick in some areas, it’s like trying to frost a cake with uneven layers. The result? Cracks.

We want our coatings to be smooth and consistent, like the perfect frosting job on a cupcake.

Tyrolean is not flexible. It will absorb moisture during the rainy autumn season and as tyrolean is not weatherproof, the water will stay in the wall.

Once winter comes and the temperature drops, that water sitting in your tyrolean expands as it freezes, and this causes cracking and the failure of the coating itself.

This is why it was of vital importance that the house had a weatherproof wall coating, one that would not crack.

This house deserved to look better than it did.

What is the typical weather in Northumberland?

Northumberland, located in the northeast of England, experiences a temperate maritime climate, characterized by mild temperatures, moderate rainfall, and relatively small temperature variations between seasons

Spring is fairly mild, with showers, summer generally ok, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 15 to 20 degrees Celsius.

There is a fair bit of rain during Autumn, but winter is quite cold, with occasional snow.

So today we’re talking about something crucial for your home—weatherproofing!

You know, just like how we make sure our hair looks good even in the rain, your house needs some love to stand strong against the elements.

Now, picture this: you’ve got a beautiful home, but without proper weatherproofing, it’s like sending your house into a storm without an umbrella.

Rain, wind, and all those unpredictable weather changes can wreak havoc on your exterior walls.

That’s where exterior wall coatings come to the rescue!

Think of them as the superhero capes for your home.

These coatings provide an extra layer of defence, shielding your walls from the relentless assault of rain, hail, and whatever else Mother Nature throws its way.

But why is it so important, you ask?

Well, let me break it down for you.

Weatherproofing not only keeps your home looking fabulous, but it also prevents water damage.

You don’t want leaks and moisture creeping into your walls, causing mould and mildew to throw a party you weren’t invited to.

And let’s talk about energy efficiency!

Those coatings help insulate your home, keeping it cosy in winter and cool in summer. It’s like giving your house a comfy sweater that adapts to the seasons.

But, you might say, “What about the aesthetics?” Fear not, my friends!

Exterior wall coatings come in a variety of colours and finishes, ensuring your home stays stylish while being a fortress against the elements.

Unfortunately the “after” photos were taken whilst the scaffolding was still in situ, but you get the idea.

So, whether you’re dealing with scorching sun, torrential rain, or gusty winds, give your home the protection it deserves.

Weatherproofing and exterior wall coatings—it’s not just a makeover; it’s a superhero transformation for your house!

What work did we do to paint and protect this house?

We go to far greater lengths in painting a house than your local painter and decorator would do.

They would just turn up and paint and nothing more. No crack repair, very often no removal of the old paint either, and guess what?

The job they do will only last a couple of years before it starts to look bad, meaning you have to call him back, year after year.

Can you imagine just how much that would cost over a 20 year period?

Our wall coatings are designed to be done just once in 2 decades, saving you more money than you ever thought possible, whilst maintaining a great looking house.

As we spray our wall coatings, we can paint large homes like this, much quicker than a traditional painter using a roller would.

We do all the repairs needed, such as crack repairs, damp proofing, paint removal, repointing, and so on.

Only then do we apply our wall coating system.

We have to mask up first and lay dust sheets everywhere: We never make a mess, even though it’s a major refurbishment and not merely a lick of paint.

First the primer, then a top coat which is applied by spray and ends up being 20 times as thick as paint, more than enough to repel the weather.

Once a weatherproof wall coating is applied to your house it is good for all weathers, and will look pristine for at least 20 years.

It’s available across all areas of England and Wales ONLY, sorry to disappoint anyone in Ireland or Scotland though.
