Front of house after painting

How to turn a run down house exterior into a home to be proud of!

So you are stood there, outside, looking at your house, and perhaps feeling a bit sad as it doesn’t look great?

Nothing to do with keeping up with the neighbours, it’s your pride and joy, your largest asset, and it really looks scruffy. Should you not look after it a bit better?

So what do you do?

You could powerwash it, that may help a bit, but if there are cracks, damp or mould, that’s not going to cut the mustard really is it?

A long term plan is needed, and we’ll show you, with the aid of a house in Newcastle upon Tyne recently renovated by us, what to do to tidy up the exterior.

Let’s learn how to turn your house into a home.

We are of course referring to getting a tradesman in, such as ourselves, rather than DIY work, although our blog has loads of DIY articles that may interest you, however let’s crack on shall we?

Considering the photo above, what did it look like before?

This house in Newcastle looked like this!

yuk!

Mouldy with cracks in the walls and flaking paint, it doesn’t inspire much does it?

The client had recently bought the house and they knew it needed far more work than they were capable of, which is why after reading our reviews, they were confident enough to call us to price the work up for them.

This was done in just an hour of surveying, which is free of charge.

We identified several areas of concern, some of which they were not even aware of, prepared a written report, with a fixed price in writing.

We found one corner of the building had suffered from concrete cancer, which major repairs were to be needed when the work was to take place.

It was evident during the survey that the house needed far more than just a paint job

They were happy with this, and booked the team to come round and sort the entire exterior of the house out for them, at a price that you may be surprised for such high quality extensive external renovation work.

It is worth noting that repairing and painting a house, even a bungalow like this example, is best left to people who know what they are doing. (us!). If you have ever tried to paint a house, it is most certainly not as easy as you think.

Moving on, what was the process we used to refurbish the outside?

Well the first thing we had to do is pressure wash all that dirt, grime and mould off the wall.

Paint or a wall coating should never be applied to dirty walls.

One that was done, we got to work removing the large areas of flaky paint, plus fixing the cracks in the walls.

There was a small amount of render repair we had to do also.

The thing is, when you buy a house that needs doing up, make sure you have enough funds left over to take care of the all the jobs that need to be done, and believe me dear reader, I speak with bitter experience!

Whatever you budget is, our advice would be to double it, you will always find things wrong with a house you never thought of or knew about so it’s worth being prepared.

The next thing we did, after carrying out all the repairs, was to mask up the doors and windows and prepare to paint the entire wall surface with a weatherproof primer coating.

We then sprayed, with the help of our high pressure machine we bought from the USA, our exterior wall coating onto all wall surfaces.

The exterior coating was applied in 2 parts, with 2 contrasting colours, which I think turned out really well, what do you think?

Here are some “after” photos when the spray painting was completed

The front of the house (compared with the photo at the top of this page) could not be more different!

The concrete cancer issues were fixed too.

As you can see, any repairs needed to your home will not be visible once the coating has been applied.
