Front of tyrolean house in wales with an exterior wall coating

Renovating a house in Wales with new durable exterior wall finish. Now the owners don’t need to see another decorator for the next 2 decades!

We present you yet another of our case studies showing the work we do day in and day out, up and down the country, on home exteriors of all shapes and sizes.

This large detached house was located in Carmarthenshire, south west Wales, and the work was carried out by Karl and his team, Welsh people who live just outside Cardiff, and a tradesman with over 25 years experience in applying exterior wall coatings.

If you own your own home you’ll be surely well aware of the need, and the constant financial cost, to keep the property in good condition, after all it is probably your most valuable asset.

Keeping the exterior walls in good order is one of the foremost issues facing homeowners.

It’s no good having the house painted very year to keep it looking good, because that can be only skin deep. Most masonry paint is literally just coloured water and offers no real long term protection from the weather.

Paint can hide a variety of problems within the walls and the structure of the house itself, often only appearing when the damage has been done (e.g. water ingress and damp often requiring far more expensive repairs than if the problem had been nipped in the bud sooner rather than later.

This house needed a more durable wall finish to stop the yearly cycle of painting.

This is why hundreds of homeowners have ditched their local decorator and had our team in to do the job PROPERLY.

Bagging coat applied to walls prior to primer coat

As you can see from the image above, this was a prestige home which was let down by a poor external appearance, although I guess it probably looks worse here with the addition of our scaffolding, which was provided a by a local Carmarthenshire scaffolding company.

Unlike a decorator who will just turn up and slap dome paint on, knowing it won’t last longer than 18 months, because he wants to come back at that point and charge you yet again for a house painting job. On a house this size, even a normal paint job can run into thousands.

Why waste money?

Having our team repair and paint your home means that due to the fact we use our long life durable exterior wall coatings to paint the building, you don’t need to worry about any further exterior decoration for 20 years, and that comes with a guarantee.

The photos above and below show the house after various repairs to render and cracks were carried out, and a cement bonded slurry known as “bagging” applied to the house.

The existing wall surface was tyrolean render, which is a sprayed cement textured coating, with a brief lifespan and a susceptibility to cracking.

Tyrolean is NOT to be confused with Terylene, which is a “……..synthetic polyester fibre or fabric based on terephthalic acid, characterized by lightness and crease resistance and used for clothing, sheets, ropes, sails, etc…..”

Here we see the gable end (or “pine end” in Wales), with it’s 1st bagging coat

Note the darker areas of wall indicating where we carried out the repairs and they were still drying out.

The bagging coat was applied all around the house (after we had masked up and covered the windows). This is essentially a stabiliser, something your local decorator would probably skip, and what is more, all stages of the coating process are breathable, meaning that it allows the walls to expand and contract according to localised temperatures.

Here we can see the main front elevation of the house looking dull and grey in its first primer coat

Again as this coating dires we can see the repaired areas, which will vanish once the coating top coat is applied to the walls.

The wall coating we apply is 20 times the thickness of modern paints making it ideal for covering up scars, cracks and blemishes.

The next phase of the wall coating application was to paint the walls with a primer coating, which is an off white colour, as shown in the image below.

The primer coat is then allowed to dry (usually overnight) and after this the team prepare the spray pump, in this case a Graco President, which we imported from our colleagues in the USA and is a high power machine which is connected to a mobile air compressor running on environmentally friendly bio diesel.

Here we can see the Graco spray pump in action.

Once the house is fully primered, we mix the various batches of coating so that they flow freely through the pipes and get sprayed onto the wall.

This fuses the paint or coating directly onto the wall and fills in the billions of tiny gaps found in a heavily textured wall surface such as tyrolean or pebbledash.

This job takes many years of training and experience to do correctly, this is generally not a service any painter and decorator can offer you.

Bear in mind these pumps cost upwards of £5,800 brand new and work at a fluid to air pressure ratio of 10:1 with a max air working pressure of 52 bar.

The spraying operative has full control of the process using a variety of settings on both the gun and the pump itself, ensuring the right amount of paint gets shot onto the wall and the coating amalgamates and is brought together onto the surface with a uniform finish, providing a deep and satisfying rich paint texture and colour to the wall.

Here is that pine end we saw earlier, now looking 100 times better!

Once the entire house has received the Never Paint Again wall coating treatment, the pump is cleaned and packed away and the team start to remove the masking paper from the doors, windows and pipes for environmental disposal off site.
