front of house in Cawsand with new exterior wall coating by wethertex and never paint again

Exterior painting of an old and historic fisherman’s cottage in Cawsand, Cornwall

Cornwall, our mysterious and windswept most southerly county has it’s fair share of bad weather, in fact the county has a history of weathering the worst storms, so protecting a house in Cornwall from the weather is very important.

This case study shows the work we did on a charming historic former fisherman’s cottage, in the village of Cawsand, a few miles outside of Plymouth.

The historic narrow streets were our first challenge, after all these homes were built hundreds of years before cars were even invented.

Cawsand is a popular holiday destination although suffers badly from 2nd home ownership, driving much of the young people away to towns and cities.

It is bordered with it’s “twin village” of Kingsand, and once hosted the border between Devon and Cornwall, now sensibly drawn along the centre of the River Tamar.

As a result, outside of holiday times the roads are largely empty, which is why we chose to render and paint the exterior of our customers cottage in February rather than August.

Rendering repairs and painting of a Cornish cottage from start to finish.

removing flaky paint from cornish cottage prior to painting

The house as we found it (above) was in a sorry state and you don’t need to be an expert to see something was needed, badly needed, to bring this lovely place up to scratch, far more than a lick of paint, I am sure you agree.

The photo above shows us in the midst of power washing the wall to remove the many years of paint that had built up, plus gave us access to the render underneath of which most was in a poor state.

A typical painter and decorator in Cornwall would just turn up and slap some more paint over the old.

That is absolutely NOT how we work or what we do.

Each house we repair and paint comes with a rock solid 20 year written warranty that the exterior wall coating on your home will NOT fade, chip, crack or peel.

So what did we do to renovate this house?

Once the powerwashing was completed and the flaky paint swept up off the floor (!) we inspected the walls for damage and signs of erosion, and then commenced repairs, which in this case consisted of a coat of Polymer render to smooth and rejuvenate the exterior walls.

As you can see from the above photo, it looks a million times better already, and we hadn’t even finished off the rendering at this point.

As the narrow ancient streets were devoid of people in winter, we were able to carry out the works in a timely manner, compared to summer time, where we would have been interrupted every 5 minutes, with “DFL’s” (Down from London) in their fancy-pants SUV’s negotiating streets that they really should not be driving down.

I digress.

The next stage was to mask up the windows and apply a special primer paint.

As you can see we had to stand back in the next street to take the photo, as the road is so narrow.

The house as you see it now is fully repaired, coated with primer, and ready for the next stage of the process, which is applying, by spray, a special durable and long life exterior wall coating.

It looks just like a high quality paint, but is so much more than that.

  • No fading, chipping, cracking or peeling, unlike masonry paint
  • Resists rain, snow, dirt, mould, coastal erosion, and pollution
  • Lowers your home heating bills, saving money.
  • A 20 year written guarantee direct from the contractor.
  • Conceals cracks, scruffy pebbledash and uneven walls.
  • Cures mould, condensation and penetrating damp.
  • Never fades, with beautiful shades, textures and colours.
  • Stops erosion, cracks, flaky paint, damp and mould.

Once the house has it’s primer coat, and is fully dried, we then begin to set up our high tech spraying machine, which we specially imported from the USA.

Tantalisingly it can be seen hiding under that dust sheet on the left!

We then hook it up to an air compressor, mix the coating solution up into large cans and start to spray apply the external wall coating to the house.

Spraying allows us to apply a very thick coat of paint, far thicker, in fact 20 times thicker, than normal masonry paint, giving the property a warm and loving protective finish, one that will not only resists sea salt attack and storms, but will go on protecting the property for the next 2 decades.

Here is the finished article, a historic home protected for future generations.
