Front of house in Essex with new energy saving wall coating

Lower your homes’ carbon footprint with our energy saving eco house coatings

In these days where climate change, carbon footprints and being green is more and more important, we show you how you can reduce or offset your houses’ carbon footprint, whilst saving a ton of money on home maintenance too.

On this page we highlight this by way of a job we recently completed, in Essex.

One of the best ways to reduce your carbon footprint is insulation, although not all homes are suitable for an intrusive installation of external insulation.

Another is having a specialist energy efficient eco wall coating applied to the external surfaces of your home, which not only provides a small amount of insulation, it also stops damp and moisture getting into the walls.

A wall coating also stops cold interior walls, which can reduce the efficiency of any home heating, plus make the interior of the house feel uncomfortable.

Here is how we reduced the carbon footprint of this house with a new wall coating installed

This impressive detached home in rural Essex was in fairly good condition, albeit with some problems related to cracking in the render, although not as bad as some previous jobs we’ve done.

Once we got our tools out of the van we set to work checking and hammer testing the rendered walls to find bad areas, bits of the render that had cracked or were coming away from the bricks behind.

This is known as hollow render and is a typical trap for damp and moisture. If left, the issue will over time get worse, and therefore more expensive to fix.

Thankfully we did not find too much to repair, apart from a fair few cracks in the walls.

The photo above shows the cracks we found in the gable end, the side of the house that “caught” much of the weather being exposed to the elements.

Any cracks found on the house were carefully cut out with an angle grinder, then filled with a high tension epoxy mortar, and then finished off with sand and cement render.

The damaged areas were then made smooth to blend in with the wall. Once the house has a wall coating paint finish applied, these repairs will not be seen, as you will discover further down the page.

Here is the rear of the house, showing repaired cracks, and masking up

The masking up bit is a very important stage.

We isolate the wall areas to be painted, and at the same time we protect the doors and windows from mess.

Once we finish, all paper is recycled.

We then hand-apply a primer to each area of exterior wall

The next stage of application is a primer, which we apply by hand across all wall surfaces, as we see in the image above.

Note we put dust sheets on all floor areas to avoid any spills or mess.

So how does this system reduce our carbon footprint?

One major energy saving factor is the fact that the house needs painting ONLY ONCE in 20 years, as opposed to a decorator painting it every 2 years with normal masonry paint.

So that is 10 less weeks of vans coming in and out, ten less weeks of kettles being boiled for the all-important cups of tea (!).

10 less paint deliveries to the site, keeping delivery lorry journeys to a minimum, helping to lower the Co2 impact of the work.

In this case, ten less times of a scaffolding lorry turning up (twice, one to erect and once to dismantle)

The fact we only have to attend your home ONCE in 20 years means huge savings over 2 decades in fuel costs, both for our suppliers, and our work men.

Not only that (yes there’s more energy saving good news)

The exterior wall coating system we use (Wethertex) is up to 40 times the thickness of masonry paint, meaning that apart from a small amount of insulation, it cuts wind chill, damp walls having wind blown at them, which draws cold water into the wall itself.

If your house walls are porous and contain moisture, the wall loses its thermal barrier and becomes what could be called a thermal conductor, allowing more and more heat to exit the house instead of staying inside and keeping you and your family nice and warm.

The wall coating system increases the “R” value of the wall, creating a highly efficient, breathable and durable paint finish that repels all types of weather, and requires no more painting or maintenance for at least 20 years, guaranteed.

This “wind chill” cools the interior walls and requires your heating to be turned up, and on for longer.

Not with our wall coating system. When masonry walls get wet with rain they lose their insulating properties, much like if you get caught out in the rain wearing summer clothes.

And if you are reading this blog post during winter time, you do not have to wait until next summer to have this on your home, it can even be applied in winter.

It’s shower resistant, unlike paint, and it can be applied in temperatures as low as minus 5 degrees, so it’s an all year round product.

We now even have a clear energy saving wall coating to offer, click the link to learn more.

Saving energy and looking great in one package!

The wall coating process usually takes about a week, depending on the size of the house and the condition it is in. The service is available in all areas of England and Wales.

As you can see, having your house painted only ONCE in 20 years saves a lot of “carbon” emissions, plus with the added bonus of saving you MONEY.

Money saved by not having it painted every other year, and money saved on having LOWER HEATING BILLS, a primary concern of many of our customers nowadays.
