front of house with new wethertex wall coating applied

An all weather wall coating to protect this house in Leeds, Yorkshire. Now it’s weatherproofed and painted for the next 20 years

One of the main differences between painting the outside of a house with masonry paint, and having our team spray apply a wall coating onto the outside of a house is weather resistance.

Normal paint will NOT protect the walls of your house, it is not designed to, but our weatherproof wall coatings are specially formulated to protect your property from the worst British weather. Normal masonry paint is actually only coloured water!

This is why our customer on the outskirts of Leeds wanted us to renovate the outside of his home.

This article briefly explains what we did to the house to achieve a weatherproof finish, especially important in this county of Yorkshire which can certainly get some challenging weather throughout the year.

Why is it so important to protect a house from the weather?

The walls of your house are not just designed to keep the roof from falling in, or just to look good when viewed from the street.

The walls need to protect you from the weather we get here in the UK, which is why we take so much time in preparation before we apply our all weather coatings, suitable for all climates, including Yorkshire.

What’s the weather like “oop north” then?

Cold and wet?

The annual rainfall in Yorkshire is around 345mm per year, with the wettest month being November, which sees a soaking wet 35mm average of rain.

Summer doesn’t fair that better either as the average temperature for Yorkshire in the month of July is only 16 degrees, which is the hottest time  of the year in the county.

So an all weather wall coating is by far the most cost effective thing to have on the outside of your house if you live a wet climate such as ours.

Should I be concerned about my exterior walls?

Probably.

You don’t need to be a builder or a tradesman to walk around the outside of your house and find problems, although some are hidden and do require an expert to take a look.

If you see cracks in the walls, that is evidence of thermal movement, which in many cases, can result in water getting in behind the rendering, which during cold weather will expand, just as water does in an ice tray, causing the render to be pushed away from the wall, detaching itself from the bricks behind.

If the area of cracking is within easy reach, tap lightly on the wall with a hammer.

If the sound from this is hollow, it means the render needs to be replaced. If not replaced at some point, it will get worse and will let damp into your house. Many so called painters and decorators won’t actually do this, they are not interested as they want to keep coming back and repainting your house very year.

Our teams are different than that and work very hard to make sure your home is in pristine condition and requires no more painting or repair for at least 2 decades, and we guarantee that fact too.

The house, from a structural point of view, had seen the years through fairly well, and did not need to much in the way of repair before we started painting although it hardly looked its best.

We had to powerwash the house to get rid of some of the flaking paint and green mould.

The first thing we did to this house after carrying out some minor repairs, was to mask up the doors and windows, and the pipes, to make sure no mess was created.

We then hand-applied a bonded cement slurry to the walls, which acts as a stabiliser.

We then hand applied a waterproof primer coating, which is fully breathable, and give us a good basis to spray apply the top coating, which comes afterwards.

The house had a general grubby, dirty appearance with mould growing on parts of the wall and paint flaking off in places.

The place needed freshening up but with a wall coating system that does not need repainting every other year, saving a ton of money in the long run.

The rear of the house did not look much better with a poor general appearance.

Part of the difficulty with painting a house with rough textured walls such as this is the fact it takes a lot more paint, and a lot more hard work, to apply anything to the walls, and if you used a roller or even worse, a paint brush, this house would take the average DIY’er months to complete.

Our team was in and out within a week.

The house now has a clean, uniform paint finish which has enhanced but also protected the property against the wet Yorkshire weather using our special all-weather wall coating system.

Once the walls were finished, we repainted the drainpipes, and also the trim at the top of the walls in matt back.

What are the benefits of having an all weather wall coating instead of normal masonry painting?

The benefits of our system are numerous, including the fact that our coating paint system will NOT fade, crack, chip or peel, and it stops all types of damp, mould and condensation.

We are so confident of this we offer a 20 year guarantee upon completion of works.

This system will also save you money over the long term as you will not need the hassle and expense of having your house painted very other year.

The system is suitable for pretty much all types of houses, and commercial buildings too, and the service is available via our network of approved agents across Wales and England.
