House in Cornwall after an exterior wall coating

One happy customer with his newly painted house! A case study in Cornwall

We like to think customers appreciate our service, our attention to detail, and our hard work, so it’s rewarding for us when we get great feedback.

This was the case with Mr Brown, a valued customer of ours in Cornwall.

Here’s a bit about what we did to his house, to repair it, paint and weatherproof it, with some before and after photos to highlight the depth and breadth of our our work.

We work on homes of all ages and all shapes and sizes, so technically this was quite an easy job for our team, but we always work to a method, and all homes we paint with our wall coating system get repairs and series of improvements even before the coating is applied.

Here is what we did to a modern home in Cornwall, using our wall coating system.

The big difference between a traditional “bloke down the pub” decorator, and ourselves, a major wall coating specialist, is simple:

A painter and decorator may well be cheaper than us in the short term, but certainly not in the longer term, especially as he or she will have to return each other year to repaint.

With our no-quibble 20 year guarantee, You won’t see us again for 2 decades, although it’s nothing personal (!).

A painter will simply PAINT, and that is it. Nothing more.

I guess that’s their job description, but it certainly does not make for a high quality, weatherproof or long lasting paint finish to your home.

When we paint your house, we spend a great deal of time making sure the exterior walls are in good condition.

front showing extensive flaky paint

Whereas, in most cases, your local decorator will not care, they will simply paint over any existing defects.

It may look nice afterwards, for a short time, but those defects are still there, and could end up causes other issues such as damp.

Having the outside of your property painted with normal paint will NOT cure damp or any defects, masonry paint is purely decorative and that is it, no more.

Damp can often be caused by cracked and hollow rendering, so we check the walls and identify which bits needs our expert attention.

As you can see from the photo above, there were a few areas of hollow render, plus cracks too.

After these are repaired and once the wall coating is sprayed onto the walls, you will not see where we have repaired.

It wasn’t just cracks that were the problem, it was flaking paint too

Flaky paint on exterior wall

There is no point in applying a paint or a wall coating over existing flaky paint, it won’t last, and we give a 20 year guarantee on all our work, it HAS TO last, so off it came!

(And take a look at the THICKNESS of the paint removed.)

That is years and years of coat, after coat, after coat, of paint.

If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing RIGHT, that has always been our approach.

The stages we follow to install an exterior wall coating are as follows:

  1. Check walls for defects (bad render, mould, cracks etc.)
  2. Repair defects
  3. Mask up windows and lay dust sheets on floor
  4. Apply a bonded resin cement slurry stabiliser (for unpainted brick and pebbeldashed houses)
  5. Hand-apply a weatherproof primer
  6. Spray apply our exterior wall coating
  7. Remove masking and sheets and clean up site

As you can see from the pile of paint chips on our dustsheets, there was lots to remove

Removing flaky paint on side of house

No matter if someone us using traditional masonry paint, or like us, using a high performance exterior wall coating, prep work is the key to a good house painting job.

If you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.

Once we were satisfied that all the necessary preparation work had been carried out, we then moved on to the next stage, which was to apply the primer coating across all walls of the house.

In the “olden days” we used the traditional method to mask up, with brown paper.

This has the unfortunate effect of plunging the house into darkness for a few days so we recently changed to using a transparent masking solution as you can see below.

We still wrap gutters and pipes etc with brown paper though.

Primer on side wall ready for topcote

Once all the repairs are done we hand apply the weatherproof primer, working it in to all the nooks and crannies of the house, as you can see form the above image.

This is then allowed to dry, usually overnight, or in the height of summer, this dries the same day.

The next stage is to set up our spray machine to apply the exterior wall coating.

You can see the machine, which we imported from America, in the photo above.

In this case, the house was to be painted in 2 contrasting colours, meaning the paint lines on the pump have to be cleaned through before the next colour goes on.

As you can see, the 2 tone paint scheme looks amazing!

The review our happy customer left us.

Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Value

On Monday 14th August, we were very fortunate to have Craig and Richard turn up to our property to re-coat it.

They had left South Wales at 5am and arrived at ours, in deep Cornwall, at approximately 08.30 They introduced themselves and immediately started work.

I made them a cup of tea, but they didn’t stop to drink it, just took the occasional sip and carried on.

I am not kidding when I say that they did not stop until approximately 19.30, not even for a lunch break! I have never seen anyone work so hard as these 2.

They left to go to their Hotel about 5 miles away, saying that they would return the next day to carry on. And so they did, at approximately 07.45 and off they went again, just work, work and more work!

This was how things went until they finished our property. They were always very friendly, courteous and knowledgeable. We were having the house done in split colour, pale green to the top and white on the ground level.

Because of the state of our house, it was always a bit embarrassing to tell people it was ours. Not any more! It looks fantastic, and we are incredibly proud to call it ours.

All down to Craig and Richard.

They were meticulous with their work and, obviously, take a huge amount of pride in what they do. They are an absolute credit to the Company and I would have no hesitation at all in recommending them to anyone.
