Front with exterior wall coating on brick and render

Painting a house exterior in Portsmouth, Hampshire with a durable external coating and what a huge difference it made!

In our line of work we get to see lots of different types of homes and to meet lots of different people.

The owners of this terraced house in Portsmouth wanted the exterior brightened up, but did not want to commit to having to paint it each year.

We came up with the ideal solution in the form of a spray applied exterior wall coating.

This is what we did to achieve that.

Each house we work on has it’s own challenges, and each client we work for have their own vision as to how they want their home exterior to look like.

After a careful consultation, and a survey of the house, they opted for a white coat of wethertex durable exterior wall coating, guaranteed for 20 years not to need repainting.

This is what we did in applying an external coating to a brick and render house in Portsmouth.

The house itself was in fairly good condition so we did not have to carry out our range of repairs which are normally needed before we apply an exterior wall coating.

The main wall surface of the house was unpainted brick.

Now, here’s the thing. Once you paint brick once, you are then committed to repainting it, usually every year or so. It’s a one way street too, if you apply paint to brick, that is final, you will never see the actual brick again, it must always be painted.

That is where our long life wall coating system comes in as once we apply the paint-like coating, it is good for the next 2 decades and we guarantee that fact too.

We can create any type of wall finish, and in this case, the finish was painted brick; you can still see the brick under the wall coating, which is important to preserve it’s character.

This is a Victorian house, you don’t want to end up with it looking like a modern home, which would ruin its character.

We normally carry out repairs but this place didn’t need it. These repairs commonly include damp proofing, repointing and rendering, but this place was OK and did not need it so we cracked on, and started to mask up the doors and windows.

Spraying the rear of a house in Portsmouth

As the surface was unpainted brick, we had to stabilise the surface and we did that using a primer coating which is cement based, and is known as “bagging”.

This also consolidates the existing pointing, sticking it all in firmly so it will never fall out.

As you can see the biggest challenge in painting a terraced house is protecting the neighbouring or adjoining buildings, which we take very seriously.

So if you own a terraced house and you want it painted, don’t worry we won’t upset your neighbours, and we won’t make a mess.

The next stage is to hand apply a primer.

Once this is dry, we set up our spraying machine and spray the wall coating onto the house.

It is 20 times the thickness of paint and is ideal for covering over defects or rough walls.

It looked good on this house, see what the “after” image of the rear looks like!

That wall will not need to be repainted for at least the next 20 years.

We can also render a brick house so the wall would be smooth, but this costs extra, and the job takes longer to do. Speak to one of our agents about having this done to your house.

Meanwhile our other team member was working on the front of the house, which was a little different as, even though it was unpainted brick, the bay window and mouldings were rendered, which needed a slightly different approach.

Here is us working on the front of the house

Front with masking and primer

As you can see we had to mask up part of the neighbours wall too, it is the only way to get a good painting job done, but without masking any mess.

We had to do the same primer as the rear, a cement based one, and then a paint based primer, and the rendered areas just had a painted on primer before spraying the top coat.

(We removed the drainpipe so we could get all the wall done, and then replaced it back afterwards.)

Once we have sprayed the top coat to the walls, we remove the masking paper and make sure we do a very thorough clean up
