Detached house in Kent with a new exterior wall coating

The best hydrophobic exterior wall coating lowered our clients energy bills

Here’s a case study of job we have recently completed, using 2 of our exterior wall coating systems; the coloured “Never Paint Again” wall coatings, and a hydrophobic transparent wall coating, which is proven to lower heating bills.

As we offer a range of wall coating systems, the homeowner chose us to carry out the work.

The house was fairly modern and the brickwork was in good condition, with no sign of frost damage or loose pointing, so that was a plus.

However the rendered areas had suffered from cracking, with some areas of render which required replacing.

We can basically tackle any size of house and with any type of existing wall surface.

Be sure to check out some of our completed wall coating and house painting jobs after you have read this page.

This is what we did to renovate and weatherproof this house in Kent.

Cracks in render

The first thing we did was to check all the rendered areas of cracks, and we found quite a few.

They were cut out with an angle grinder, filled and smoothed to match the existing wall surface, as you can see from the image above.

There was a fair amount of flaking paint too, which we had to remove.

They only had it painted (with normal paint) a year ago, and this goes to show that paint does not last very long at all, however our wall coatings last upwards of 20 years.

On a large home such as this, having it repainted every year can end up costing a lot of money over time.

repairing the cracked rendering

Each part of the rendered area of this house we found cracks and loose paint.

There were also small patches where the render had become detached from the wall, creating a void between the render and the bricks beneath, which can start of the process of damp in the home.

All of our wall coating systems are designed to cure damp, mould, condensation, erosion and mildew.

This is important to fix before we proceed with applying the wall coating.

Once the crack repair was completed, we masked up the windows.

We also put dust sheets down on the floor.

Unlike your typical local builder, we know your house is not a building site, so we keep mess and fuss to an absolute minimum whilst carrying out the work.

You can see the repaired cracks also in the image above.

They won’t be seen once the wall coating is applied to the house.

As the upper part of the wall was tiled we didn’t need to touch that, that is already weather protected, so we applied a primer, by hand, and then sprayed our NEVER PAINT AGAIN coating onto the wall.

Once that was dry, we removed the masking paper and touched up the plinth (the base of the wall) in matt black.

We always like to show off our work with before and after pictures, which we can with the painted areas, but the areas of brick we treated, with ProPerla insulating wall coatings, the coating doesn’t change the appearance of the wall, so it’s tricky to show you any change!

Of course most, but not all, the upper floors were clad in tiles, the same as roof tiles, meaning zero maintenance and complete weatherproofing, so most of the work on this building was at ground level, which makes it much easier for the team.

What are super hydrophobic wall coatings?

Super hydrophobic exterior wall coatings are special types of coatings that can make surfaces highly water-repellent.

The term “super hydrophobic” refers to the extreme ability of a material to repel water. When applied to exterior walls, these coatings create a protective barrier that causes water to bead up and roll off the surface, rather than wetting or penetrating it.

The superhydrophobic effect is achieved by incorporating nanotechnology into the coating formulation.

The coatings are typically composed of a mixture of hydrophobic materials, such as nanoparticles or polymers, suspended in a liquid carrier.

When applied to a surface, the hydrophobic particles create a microscopically rough texture, which traps air pockets between the surface and water droplets.

This trapped air prevents water from making direct contact with the surface, resulting in the water-repellent behaviour.

The benefits of super hydrophobic exterior wall coatings are numerous:

Water resistance: The primary advantage is that these coatings effectively repel water. Rainwater, moisture, and other liquids will form into droplets and roll off the surface, preventing water damage and the formation of stains, mould, or mildew.

Self-cleaning properties: Due to their high water repellency, these coatings can help keep exterior walls clean. When water droplets roll off the surface, they pick up dirt, dust, and other contaminants, effectively cleaning the wall as they flow away.

Protection against weathering: The superhydrophobic coating acts as a protective layer against the elements. It can help prevent the degradation of the underlying material caused by exposure to sunlight, UV radiation, rain, and other environmental factors.

Longevity: These coatings are designed to be durable and long-lasting. They can withstand harsh weather conditions, temperature fluctuations, and ultraviolet (UV) exposure without losing their water-repellent properties.

Energy efficiency: By reducing water absorption, superhydrophobic coatings can improve the thermal insulation properties of exterior walls. This can help to maintain a more stable indoor temperature, reducing the need for heating or cooling and contributing to energy savings.

Superhydrophobic exterior wall coatings have applications in various industries, including construction, architecture, automotive, and marine.

They can be used on a wide range of surfaces, including concrete, metal, wood, and plastics, providing water resistance and protection to buildings, infrastructure, vehicles, and other structures.

It is worth noting that while super hydrophobic coatings are highly effective in repelling water, they may not provide complete protection against water intrusion in situations where there is high pressure or prolonged exposure to water, although that is not relevant in the content of house coatings.

Additionally, the longevity of the coating can vary depending on factors such as the quality of application, surface preparation, and environmental conditions.

Regular inspection and maintenance may be necessary to ensure the continued performance of the coating, which is what our company offers all of our customers; 5 yearly inspections, free of charge, up to 20 years after application.

Our wall coating service is available in most areas of England and Wales.

A quotation is completely free and you are never under any obligation or pressure to buy, it is up to you, not us.
