This prestigious detached country home near Cambridge was costing it’s owners a small fortune in frequent exterior painting, so they were very pleased when we showed them a house painting system that does not need to be repainted for 2 decades.
The photo at the top of the page could be straight out of country life magazine, but digging deeper we found the exterior paint in poor condition.
Many exterior wall coating systems on the UK market today are textured, which is great for hiding defects or for painting over pebbledash, but the painted brick finish of this home required something that did not ruin it’s unique character so we offered them a SMOOTH version of our wall coating.
Renovating a prestige home with smooth finish exterior wall coatings.
The first task was to have the scaffolding erected to ensure the safety of our men. We used a local Cambridge company for this.
The paint was in poor condition but the house substrate itself required very little in the way of repairs apart from removing some patches of the old masonry paint.
It was costing the owners of this house a lot of money every 2 years to have it repainted, and let’s face it, who wants workmen around all the time?
You can see in this photo, despite the house having been painted less than 2 years ago, bits of paint were flaking off and the house had an overall “dirty” look to it.
The first thing we did was to attack the walls with a high pressure power washer, which got to work removing any loose areas of paint, of which there were many.
It is worth noting that when a local decorator from nearby Cambridge painted this house, they apparently used a top brand masonry paint, so it just goes to show what a waste of money painting can be.

The 2nd thing that we did after removing the flaking paint was to mask up the doors and windows and lay dust sheets across the paved areas, we don’t want to make any mess despite this being a major refurbishment instead of a quick lick of paint.
We then hand applied a primer coating across the entire house, which is applied by hand and then allowed to dry overnight.
After that we set up our spraying machine to blast the walls with a smooth masonry coating, developed by Wethertex, which will not fade, crack, chip or peel, and is guaranteed to last over 20 years before it needs doing again.

As you can see the wall coating gives a very good, deep finish and does not hide the fact that the house is made of bricks, which can clearly be seen under the coating, making sure it does not alter or ruin the appearance, rather it enhances the walls.
After this photo was taken we painted the plinth at the base of the wall with black, which set the whole thing off a treat.
In fact as the job went on, and various parts were completed, the house really started to shine and come into it’s own, which can clearly be seen in the next photo standing in their lovely gardens and gazing wondrously at a very nice house, somewhere a mere mortal such as myself can only dream of living in.

It would have been a better photo if the scaffolding was not there but we couldn’t hang around for it to be taken down, which it was after a few days after we left.
