Subject: What type of render/paint is this?
Hi there,
We have had a garage built and the builders smooth rendered it and said the bumps to match our bungalow could be achieved by using textured paint but we have not been able to find a paint this bumpy textured so I believe they have done wrong and should have used a different type of render process but before I call them to argue the case I need to know, am I correct?
In anticipation,
Many thanks

Dear *****************, thank you ever so much for your email.
It is difficult to pinpoint exactly the exterior wall finish on your house without being there in person, but looking at the images, it would appear to be originally coated with Tyrolean (hand sprayed mortar) and then painted many MANY times over the years.
My advice to you would be to get an exterior wall coating specialist like NPA to remove the many layers of paint and to refurbish the exterior with a new textured coating, as quite frankly if the surface on the wall is painted over (again), if its lasts more than one winter I would be very surprised, and then the process starts all over again!
An exterior wallcoating company would be able to provide a uniform finish, exactly the same, across the garage extension and the original house, and this would not need painting for at least 20 years. Please let me know if you would like more information about this process.
I will post your enquiry on our BLOG (with names removed) and see if anyone else has the same idea.
To match this surface, the smooth render on your garage would have to be coated with a cement rich mix of Tyrolean, in a light pattern, left to dry for a few days and then coated again with a cement slurry mix of sand/cement and pva unibond, mixed into a creamy paste and applied with a brush. Then the wall would need to be painted with a stabiliser, then 2 coats of a good masonry paint. I would advise you though that unless the builder knows exactly what I am talking about, it would be best left to an an exterior wall expert instead.
This process will more or less get the results you desire.
I hope this is of some help to you. If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to get in touch but please also tell your friends and family about our website at www.neverpaintagain.co.uk as a return favour for the free advice, given of course, with thanks.
Thank you again or your email and I hope that your building project turns out the way you would like it to.
Kind regards

do YOU have an alternative explanation? Then please post your comments here. (moderated, no adverts please). Thank you.
PS, we edited the mistake out of the original post which stated that wall coatings lasted for 290 years!!!!!! (DOH!), they last for usually about 20 years until they need doing again.
