Removing old failing wall coating and what to do next
Here’s another question posed to us from a user of this website who wanted info about an old textured coating that had come away from the wall……………
Hello
My dual course brick (no cavity) Victorian house has been coated in the past with a synthetic material that is now cracking and lifting in many places. It may have been applied by Wallcoat but I can’t be sure.
Can you advise if there’s a way of removing it without damaging the brick surface beneath? If removal would compromise the brick surface, what method of painting/coating would you suggest to protect the house?

OUR REPLY:
Dear P****, thanks ever so much for your email.
It would probably be best if you could reply to this email with a phone number and i will get a surveyor to call you as my reply to you, regarding your problem would be a long essay!
I will post this on our blog to see if anyone else has any other suggestions to your problems. In short though, it sounds like the wall coating on your home has not been applied properly which is why it is lifting off and coming away from the wall.
As most brands of exterior wall coatings are a seamless system, they cannot easily be repaired and the usual course of action is to remove the lot and start again, doing the job properly! Removal of an existing wall coating can also be expensive, and it is unlikely that, if the old wallcoating is removed, you would be able to see the original surface, and you are then faced with the issue of what to put BACK onto the walls.
As far as damaging the surface underneath, well, again, i don’t have enough info about your home, the material on the walls, or anything else, in order to give you a definitive answer and my suggestion would be perhaps to find out how much it would cost to re coat the house. That’s about the best suggestion i could offer. If you would like to reply with a phone number, mobile is fine, i will get one of our team to call you and have a chat.
Kind regards
Guy Alexander Bell
