How do your resin based exterior wall coatings differ from Coloured (or through) render?
There are many different types of exterior wall finishes in the built environment today, some have been used for centuries, such as daub, Devon cob, harling, lime render etc.
Some exterior wall coverings have been developed as the next generation of exterior wall finishes, such as resin based exterior wall coating systems , or coloured through render systems, but how do they differ?
Resin based exterior wall coatings
Resin based exterior wall coatings have been in use for many years and were initially developed by the American military after world war 2. The first products on the market were made with asbestos, before it became clear how dangerous this really was, and some textured coating had asbestos added to them right up until the end of the 1970′s

They are also known in the USA as Liquid vinyl, and elastomeric texture coatings, but more commonly in the UK and Europe, they are known as wall coatings, wallcoatings or textured spray applied coatings. These high performance paints are ideally suited to most domestic houses and have the added benefits that they stop damp, they dont crack, peel or fade, and many, like the famous NEVER PAINT AGAIN system, come with an insurance backed warranty for 15 years!
One major advantage, especially if you are wondering how to fix penetrating damp is that these wall coating have special resins and silicone components meaning they repel water but dont seal the house up, so they are ideal to fix damp issues in your walls.
They are very much similar to thick paint and they are not a DIY product, they must be installed by professionals, and all repairs have to be done before the coating can be applied. A primer is also needed, or in some cases two coats depending on the surface that the coating is being applied to. The house has to be masked up also, meaning that high winds can stop work, so this is very much a system for better weather, although the cold does not affect this so much.
They are commonly known as TEXTURED COATINGS within the trade.
Coloured or through render
This differs from the first exterior wall finish we discussed as the spray applied coatings are exactly that, a COATING which goes on top of another exterior wall surface such as brick, pebbledash or render, and they are in a semi liquid form, whereas monocouche coloured renders are usually applied direct to the substrate of the building, and are an exterior wall finish in themselves.
These renders differ from traditional render insofar as instead of being cement coloured and then a coating of paint applied over the top, the colour is mixed in with the render, giving it its “through” moniker.
They are particularly good for larger projects such as hotels and public buildings and, like the spray applied coatings, they dont need painting and apart from sometimes requiring a gentle clean, they are usually maintenance free.
Many housing estates built over the past few years in the UK have had coloured render applied to them.
Both these types of wall finish can save a lot of time and money in future repainting or maintenance.
Both wall systems are more expensive than traditional sand and cement render, but the performance and longevity outweigh the initial costs of application.
Both wall systems are available from NPA Never paint again
Cold weather does not affect textured spray coatings but cold weather DOES affect the application of through render in cases, so strict adherence to the manufacturers application code is always adhered to..
Its usually best to speak to an expert if you are considering getting a quote to have either a spray applied wall coating, or coloured render applied to the exterior walls of your home as this is not usually the type of work that can be done yourself, neither is it something that your local general builder will be able to do.
