Flipper Fantastic! Sea Lion Art. Animals that paint!

In a rare quiet moment at the NPA office, we found this article which we are still laughing at now! Please feel free to add any comments at the foot of the page.

Having no hands and penchant for fish isn’t the most promising start for any budding artist.

Morgan, joining the ranks of famous artists

But despite the odds – flippers and all – sea lions Morgan and Aero have joined the ranks of artists who have had their work displayed in an art gallery.

The slippery pair, aged six and three, have learnt how to paint by holding the brushes in their mouths.

It not only helps to stimulate the super intelligent animals but will also raise money for charity when the art goes on sale.

The creatures at Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park in North Devon have been busy making new creations in a bid to make a splash into the art world.

Sea lion curator Nikki Morrison said handlers came up with the idea as a way of keeping the animals mentally stimulated in captivity.

She said: “The painting was one of the ideas we tried out to see if they would like it and the sea lions seem to get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

“Depending on their mood, it can get them really excited, in which case they don’t always stick to the conventional method of paint to canvas but sometimes decide to paint the floors, walls or even me on the odd occasion.

“If they seem a little stressed or having an off-day, as we all do sometimes, it seems to really relax them and help them focus.”

The art work will go on display at Ilfracombe’s Landmark Theatre next year with half the proceeds of any sales going to the Marine Conservation Society.

The paintings will appear as part of an exhibition of local artist Robert Hill. He said: “I have seen one or two pieces they have done. I am sure that in the sea lion world they are looked upon with awe.”
