Touching up your home by adding a fresh lick of paint and some stylish new furnishings is a great way to improve the atmosphere and overall appearance within your home, but it’s fair to say it can all get a little confusing if you don’t plan out the renovation in good time.

With that in mind, here are a few handy tips and tricks (learned the hard way!) which are sure to save you time and reduce stress!

Prepare to Paint

Before bringing some new and potentially expensive features into your home, it’s important to undertake any painting and wallpapering jobs you may have beforehand to reduce the risk of damage to your new furnishings.

The best steps you can take in preparation for a new paint job (aside from recruiting help from your family and friends) are as follows:

Remove as many pieces of furniture from the room as possible, and move larger pieces that you are unable to move to the centre of the room and lover with ‘dust blankets’ or old, unused bed sheets.

Tape around the edge of doorframes, windows, coving and skirting boards with painter’s tape; many people use masking tape but it can often become overly sticky and prove hard to remove at later stages.

Cover the floor and any areas directly below where you will be painting with plastic drop cloths; these can be bought fairly cheap at most hardware stores.

Remove any nails or screws from the wall, seal the hole with filler and sand the protruding filler after it has dried.

Be Aware of the Space you have

Over-filling a room with new furnishings is an easy mistake to make, and by simply overestimating the size of a room, you can spend hundreds of pounds on an item that simply won’t fit into the room.

With this tried and tested method however, you can be sure that you won’t make this mistake, and you’ll know where each piece fits nicely too.

There is no expensive interior design software required here; all you needs is a tape measure, a few sheets of graph paper, a ruler and a marker. So, let’s get started!

Using your tape measure, measure the height and width of the walls, the height and position of any windows and the width of any doors. Be sure to note whether or not the doors open into the room you are sketching out, as you will need to account for the space the door needs late in this process.

On the graph paper, draw a basic sketch of the room using the measurements you took with the tape measure; each large square on the page will be represent 1 metre, and each of the smaller squares will be equivalent to 10cm or 100mm in length. Remember to use the door’s width measurement to sketch the open door into to room (if applicable), and a dotted arch to account for the space the door requires.

Take note of any current fitted furniture and suites that take up space in the room; for example in a standard bathroom there is usually a bathtub, toilet and sink (and sometimes a separate shower enclosure too) so taking the length and width measurements of each piece and adding them into your sketch is vital. Be sure to use the same measurement system to add the templates in, each small square is equal to 100mm and so on.

Next, find details about the furniture or features you are looking to add, if there is not an exact piece you have your eye on find something similar to it. Collect information on the item’s width and length measurements, and then sketch them out on a SEPARATE PIECE of graph paper.

Label each template with an appropriate name and carefully cut them out.

Now you can use the template cut-outs to place around your room sketch and get an accurate idea of where each fixture and piece of furniture will fit best.

A quick and easy way to prepare for any home improvement project!

So there we are, a quick and simple method to help figure out exactly how much space you have to play with in your home! Remember, taking on an indoor renovation is one thing, but creating and repairing the exterior of your home requires attention to detail from a professional eye; Never Paint Again’s range of home improvement services are on hand to help!

There is no arguing the fact that a new coat of paint will improve the look of your home, however, will it enhance or contradict the style of your tile? This is something that must be answered in order to have the best style.

Now, a lot of homeowners think that any paint will work and that is not the case. What you must understand is that different paint styles work better with certain types of tile.

For example, if you are going to use a glossy paint, then make sure the floor tile shares that same features. One the other hand if you want to use flat paint, then it would be best to use a large tile with a grout colour that compliments the wall colour.

Colour selection is of great importance

Being that paint is much easier to change, you should not overlook the simple fact that testing is the key to getting the right paint colour for your existing tile. What I highly recommend is that you get a few paint samples and test them next to the tile.

Doing this will give you an idea of how the room will look once the wall is painted that particular colour. Just keep in mind that until you paint the entire wall you won’t be able to get a exact picture of what the room will look like.

With that said, I do have a few tips on choosing the right paint for your existing tile flooring. You will see them below, so make sure you read through them as they will help you a great deal.

Tips On Choosing The Right Paint

Be Creative – There are millions of different paint colours out there, however, none of them might appeal to you. If that is the case, then simply create your own colour or design.

All you have to do is mix some colours together or add lines, stripes or even sponge paint your wall. Doing different thing will give your room a totally different feel to it and that is what you want.

Test Multiple Colours until you find what feels right.

When it comes to choosing the best paint for your room, you need to test multiple colours. Lets say that you test a blue and you don’t like it. That doesn’t mean that blue won’t work, it just means that the blue you had didn’t work.

Why not try turquoise, baby blue, dark blue and other blue’s that may suit your better? Trust me, testing multiple colours is the only way to decide on the perfect paint colour to enhance the look of your existing tiles.

Clear Out Your Room

One final thing that you should do is clean out the room you are painting. Many homeowners will throw paint cover over their furniture but the problem is that you won’t get a sense of what the room looks like. It is because of this that you should remove everything from the room you are painting so that you can see how the wall colour is going to mesh with the tile flooring.

Well, there you have it – my three tips on choosing the right paint for your existing tile flooring. Make sure you keep these in mind because they will help you and the best part is that they are not difficult to understand.

About The Author

Welcome to Never Paint Again, the original European wide house painting service. We offer our exterior wall coating service, as an alternative to yearly house painting, across several places in Europe.

This doesn’t mean we are shockingly expensive! In fact we are so confident our prices are cheaper than the nearest rival, we guarantee to BEAT ANY LIKE-FOR-LIKE QUOTE!

So we paint houses across Europe, yeah?

Well….er…… not quite, but that’s about the best way to sum it up.

We have been around since 1986 and the Editor of this website has seen service applying our special wall coatings in the UK, France, Spain, Gibraltar, the middle east and the USA, however we offer service in many parts of northern Europe.

We don’t exactly “paint” houses as such; that is an activity that is required every year or every two years and can be a right pain in the neck for many people.

What we do to houses.

We developed out service whereby we do a full repair to the exterior walls of houses, and commercial buildings, and then we apply one of two specially developed durable and weatherproof exterior wall coatings to the walls.

We offer a special spray applied wall coatings, similar to a durable and flexible paint, or we apply an insulating coloured through render, sometimes called “monocap” or “monocouche”. Both systems are maintenance free.

So what’s so good about our service?

Once the wall coating or coloured render is applied, we guarantee that for at least 15 years, no painting or maintenance will be required.

This service is in high demand and is a major factor in keeping house looking great but also protecting them from the weather and stopping damp happening too.

Houses across Europe are built specifically to keep the weather at bay, however the exterior walls take a hammering from the elements and need to be kept in good order or the damp may return, plus the structure of building may become unsound.

Whether you want to keep your home in Spain cool, or your house in Scotland warm, we can provide a value for money premium solution, at a low LOW price!

Skipping a yearly re-paint or not getting cracks and loose rendering fixed will cost far more in the long term, so we actively help people keep their homes in tip-top condition with our special exterior wall coverings, exclusively from NEVER PAINT AGAIN.

As we advertise by word of mouth and via the internet, we can keep offering top quality products at rock bottom prices!

Our service is available in:

The whole of the British isles including Ireland.

Spain, including some of the islands.

The British colony of Gibraltar.

Portugal, mainly the Algarve.

Mainland France.

This does NOT mean we charge a fortune, as we have agents who work on our behalf across Europe and therefore we can retain our super low prices for exterior wall coatings across Europe. No other UK based organisation can do this!

It’s fair to say that giving your home a stylish and modern makeover is not cheap by today’s standards, and transforming a standard-issue household into a sleek, contemporary pad is sure to cost any homeowner a sizeable sum of money!

There are however, some handy and inexpensive ways to add some modern and contemporary style to your home without breaking the bank; so with that in mind, let’s take a look at some of these simple home décor tips!

Apply New Colour Schemes

“Redecorating and repainting a room is considerably cheaper than sourcing expensive features, and in many ways much more visually effective.”

Colours can easily evoke emotions and convey themes and the application of a new colour scheme is the most direct way to make a huge difference to the look and ‘feel’ of a room. Be sure to apply new colour schemes where appropriate, certain colours and tones that may look great in one room could easily look odd and misplaced in another.

Don’t forget the exterior!

Older structures can often suffer from brick damage and weathered paint jobs, giving your home’s exterior walls a touch-up and repaint adds a fresh and attractive character to the building. Local stores and establishments often make the most of this attractive and enticing makeover, as the fresh and clean appearance of fresh paint is undeniably inviting.

Consider the practical side of each colour you provide; bright, vibrant and ‘refreshing’ colours such as pale greens and blues can look great when applied in bathrooms and kitchens.

Their light summery tones accent the practical use of the rooms and would likely add more character to the space. A light green living room however would go against the practical use of the room; living rooms are better-suited to warming, comforting tones such as deep maroons and blacks. These colours really allow the lighting to ‘glow’, seamlessly adding a comforting, warming effect to the space.

Dashes of Contemporary Style

Adding smaller pieces of modern home furniture and some well-matched accessories can add heaps of style with minimal effort and cost. Great pieces of contemporary artwork can be bought to match and compliment a room’s chosen colour scheme, and with modern décor being so popular nowadays you can find a great print for under £20.

Complimenting your chairs, sofa and bed with some stylish cushions and throws that adhere to the colour scheme and contrast nicely with the furniture is a great way to add some sleek finishing touches to a living room. Consider adding some colourful scented candles to add a relaxed and luxurious atmosphere to the space with minimal effort; this can be hugely effective in any room, especially in the areas in which you enjoy relaxing.

So there we are; some simple tips to help you add some extra style to your home without overspending!
