Exterior walls rendered and now wants to DIY paint his house

Hi, i had my rear exterior walls re-rendered three months ago and am now ready to paint after the drying out period.  Can you tell me if i should seal the walls before i paint?

the render was a typical sand and cement mix.  if so, what sealer should i use? Any advice would be  appreciated.

Regards

Mark

AND WE WROTE…………………..

Well Hi Mark, and thank you for asking me this question. Firstly in normal cases you do NOT have to wait 3 months after rendering for the walls to “dry out”. If the walls were damp (etc) during the 3 month period I would strongly suggest you have someone competent take a look at your house, and to be honest, the walls should be ready for painting (at least with normal masonry paint) after only a few days!!!!!!!

If the walls took that long to “dry” you may have other problems in your home that quite simply painting alone will NOT solve. These issues could most probably be damp coming into the house, perhaps penetrating damp, or rising damp. I would get a builder or damp proofing company to take a look BEFORE you embark on the paint scheme.

Nevertheless, your question, “Should i seal the walls”. Well, again, only have a brief description from yourself so its difficult to know how to correctly advise you, some some of this is generalised a little.

Quite often when you render a wall with sand and cement rendering, after the surface has dried there will be a fine coating of loose sand or dust left over from the rendering. This needs to be BRUSHED OFF with a stiff broom head, to get rid of the loose dust on the surface. This is essential before you paint. I would recommend a diluted coating of a PVA mix such as Unibond or similar.

Secondly, there ARE some wall sealers available and we have posted a link below for you to be able to purchase a wall sealer or primer online with next day delivery.

Please note these are NOT OUR PRODUCTS.

…..After this, you would need to apply 2 coats of a good quality masonry paint, However, that is a separate essay in itself and despite the fact that I enjoy giving advice out, I dont get paid to do so, so you’ll have to excuse this reply being somewhat brief as I could sit here all day and write a book about how to correctly paint a house!
Best of luck anyway with your house painting project……….
