Pebble dash is not to everyone’s taste and like it or loath it, it doesn’t last for ever and at some time, if your home is covered in pebbledash, it is going to need to be re-done, but do you REALLY WANT that awful stuff covering your home?

What’s wrong with pebbledash?

Pebbledash, as an exterior wall coating, only has a finite lifespan so when the outside walls of your house look tired, with missing stones, cracks, hollow render and bald areas of pebbles, now is the time to consider getting it spruced up perhaps?

Pebbledash was designed to cover up poor quality brickwork and the problem is that over time, the stones drop out (check your path or driveway for proof) and then the water resistant nature of the pebbles is lost and the render behind starts to soak up water. As a dashed wall is not flexible, the water, once inside the house, freezes during cold weather and pushes the dash off the wall, causing even bigger problems.

What can be done with pebble dash?

Well for a start, if you have ever tried to paint over pebbledash, you will know what a thankless and awful task this is, in fact I have yet to see a house, in all my years as a surveyor, that looks good after a lick of paint over the pebbledash, in fact most of them look diabolical! Repairs to pebbledash NEVER match in, and the replacement of the dash can cause more problems than it cures.

The stones which fall off the wall, cannot be replaced.

This is also evident where a pebbledashed house has had previous repairs or alterations, the 2 areas of wall NEVER match up and in some cases, it looks awful! (see an example of this)

Builders who remove and replace pebbledash

So along comes sub contractors “Dodgy Darren P” and “Mad Mike D”, in their beaten up van, for the “cash in hand “job they promised you with their hard-sell at the doorstep!

Now is the time to panic!

There are two ways a “builder” deals with old pebbledash, both horrendously bad for your house.

The first is FORCED REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT.

If the pebbledash is firmly stuck to the wall, when a builder forcibly removes it, his tools WILL rip out the mortar joints and the faces of the brick beneath, causing potential structural damage to your house which if the local building inspector turns up, you will have some explaining to do.

This also means that he has a duty to inform your home insurance company of the works, who, after a further inspection, may then invalidate your home insurance

I am not kidding or trying to “sell” you our system, this really does happen and we have some quite scary photos of people doing it to prove it.

The 2nd method is applying MORE pebbledash over the old stuff!

UH-OH!

If your builder does this, they will almost certainly render over the top of cracks, locking damp and other problems in, plus adding more pebbledash to window reveals, often means that you can never ever open your windows properly again.

This increases the STRUCTURAL LOAD on your wall, something your house was not designed for, and yes, in some cases, this has causes walls to have major cracks, and in the “best case scenario”, if you can call it that, the old pebbledash wall will “reject” the new dash, which will eventually AND LITERALLY fall off in chunks. This is based on real life experience.

What is the best solution for pebbledash painting?

No, hold on, bear with me on this one!

I will explain. It’s about this time of year, we’ve finished the “looking back” phase (just after new year) and now most of us look forward to what 2012 will bring.

Ok, so the economy isn’t in good shape, on the surface for many, things dont look so fab, but on a more practical level, we all live in houses and pretty soon you will be thinking about having to get the exterior painted YET AGAIN, as it doesn’t look so good.

February 14th: Imagine you and your partner, glass of wine in hand, on the patio, framed by your house in the background with grubby, cracked walls and peeling paint? Doesn’t really set the scene very well does it?

There are many different external wall surfaces on the various different types of British houses and some are only temporary, lasting up to 2 years maximum, like masonry paint, and some wall coverings last a lot longer and provide better value for money for a slightly higher short term investment.

So which wall coverings are truly weather resistant?

Well, for a start PAINT, the type you buy down at B & Q or the sort your decorator uses, is a wall covering which is essentially only decorative and provides very little protection at all. OK, a bare rendered wall will get a tiny bit of protection if painted, but that is very much short term and in fact masonry paint will start to break down after only the first winter.

Paint will NOT protect your home against bad weather.

Pebbledash, is another popular external wall covering which were developed at the first part of the previous century, essentially to cover up poor quality brickwork. The older type of pebbledash does provide some basic long term weather protection, however over time, the stones drop out, leaving the bare render behind.

This unprotected external wall surface is then able to absorb water from rain, which then freezes and cracking occurs. Renewal is often expensive, and cheaper quality flint chips are often used, making the covering into spar dash.

Tyrolean and rough cast walls are also prone to attack from the elements and often crack and allow damp into the house. Many of these coatings also dont really look very nice and therefore if you are simply looking for long term paint solutions for your house, something more long lasting may be best.

Unpainted brick or stone is another exterior wall surface which is prone to attack from the UK weather and we have a couple of solution for your walls, depending on whether you want the brick (etc) to remain unpainted but to have weather protection, OR we can apply a coloured wall coating, giving maximum protection, with the minimum of fuss.

In general, most normal exterior wall coverings are purely decorative.

There are tremendous benefits to this system, although there are critics of it too and we look at both sides of the argument here and we suggest viable alternatives to having cavity wall insulation.

In general cavity wall insulation is fitted for a reason; i.e. to cure the symptoms of cold walls and wind chill. This also has a positive effect on lowering heating bills, however there are some drawbacks too, AND there are alternative ways to insulate your home.

The three main types of UK Cavity wall insulation.

Rockwool

1. A popular and widely used insulation product is made from mineral wool insulation, and is known as Rockwool and is made from, as it suggests, old wool.

2. Polystyrene balls. These tiny balls are injected into holes in the wall with a special pump, usually mounted within the teams lorry. (NOTE, NEVER PAINT AGAIN does NOT offer this system)

3. Insulating foam. This is the less commonly used option and is often made from either polyurethane or formaldehyde foam, which must comply with BS:5618  and BS5617

Good or bad?

On the face of it, insulating a cavity wall seems a good idea, however not everyone agrees….

Houses with cavity walls were built to keep out rain driven by the wind, however if the cavity, the gap between each “leaf” of the walls, is filled, there is, some would say, a risk that moisture will then have a way of bridging the cavity and entering the house.

This can cause DAMP where previously it did not exist.

Another problem can be the “wall ties”, the metal rods inside the cavity which help to hold each side the wall together; they can rust when cavity wall insulation is injected, and in the worst case, can cause the outer leaf to fail and come tumbling down into the street or worse.

Of course the cavity wall industry denies this.

And from our viewpoint, it also leaves scar marks across the wall where the team have installed the insulation, meaning that you now have to have the exterior of the house painted with a thick durable paint to hide the blemishes!

How is suitability for cavity wall installation ascertained?

An authorised contractor will survey the house to determine whether cavity wall insulation is suitable and would commonly look at the following factors. The exposure of the walls of the house to driving rain, the condition of the masonry joints or “pointing” of the masonry outer leaf, the type of insulation material required and finally, the masonry material itself is considered.

Alternatives to cavity wall insulation.

If filling the cavity walls of your home is not something you feel you would benefit from, then there are other alternatives available, from NEVER PAINT AGAIN.

Exterior spray applied wall coatings

These value for money external wall coatings help in reducing wind chill and curing damp, all of which can make a house very cold if not treated. Not only does our external wall covering system cure wind chill and cold walls, it also stops damp, and does NOT need repainting for up to 20 years!

Exterior thermal render

This system is an addition to our already popular coloured render and has thermal insulating mesh built into the walls before application of the final aesthetic coat of render. This amazing system has excellent thermal properties and is suitable for most houses.

Solid wall insulation

Solid wall insulation obviously does not apply for cavity walls and therefore is not suitable, but if your home was built before 1920, chances are it will not have a cavity so that form of thermal insulation inst any good, but the exterior retro fitted insulation from NEVER PAINT AGAIN is by the far the best way to insulate a house without cavity walls.

External wall insulation is a layer of material, sometimes boards or sometimes insulated render, applied to the external walls of the house.

So what’s the answer?

So as you can see cavity wall insulation has its pro’s and cons but overall, if done correctly, big savings can be had on heating, and in some areas of the UK insulation GRANTS and other financial help is also available.

It is worth remembering that GRANTS paid to homeowners for cavity wall insulation are paid for BY TAKING HIGHER TAXES off everyone!!

However, cavity wall insulation can actually cause more problems than it can cure, but if you choose one of our exterior wall coatings, insulation or render systems, you will have the same benefits and MUCH more!
