What are the different types of painters and decorators called?

House wall painters are operatives employed to repair and paint the external walls of your home with masonry paint, however Never Paint Again has a wall coating system that does NOT require repainting each year.

So how come we can paint walls only every 15 or 20 years and NOT every year or 2 years like normal house painters?

It would help the reader if the concept and methods of house painting were explained, and contrasted with the Never Paint Again Exterior wall coating system of painting houses.

House wall painters.

Painters and decorators of normal houses fall into 5 distinct categories.

  1. The keen but often misguided DIY enthusiast.
  2. The “cash in hand” part time painter.
  3. Specialist or artistic painters (for murals or trompe l’oeil)
  4. Professional painting and decorating contractors.
  5. Exterior weatherproof wall coating companies.

Although each of the above are involved in a common activity, i.e., applying paint or wall coverings to external walls, let’s now look at each one in turn.

1. The keen DIY’er.

This well meaning person may have had some successful experience doing interior decorating and now they feel confident enough (or mad enough?) to attempt to paint the exterior of their home.

Be careful what company you choose…….

Although this article is written by me, a Surveyor, I dont need to remind you that paint for exterior walls has to be far more durable than, for example, emulsion for internal walls as, unless it rains on a regular basis INSIDE your home (!?), internal paint does not need protection from the weather or the UV rays of the sun.

If it IS raining inside your house, I would suggest you either check the state of your roof, OR contact a priest, very quickly, especially if the dogs head starts to rotate through 360 degrees.

Normal masonry paint is in most cases, simply coloured water and painting it on your walls will NOT protect the fabric of the house (the bricks, the render etc) and will not last very long at all.

In addition, painting the outside of a house requires far more equipment, tools and know how. The tell take sign of a DIY painter would be the fact they often start painting at the bottom, floor level, in an attempt to gain confidence to paint the upper floors.

A tight squeeze working on this house!

Each bank holiday and summer, the local hospitals see a huge increase in inpatients with DIY accidents which, in extreme cases, can end up in death!

If you are not experienced in painting the outside of your house, please DO NOT attempt it. It will probably look awful, will not last more than a year, and you risk your life in some cases by doing so, just to save a few pounds.

2. The “cash in hand” part time painter.

This person is often either “on the dole” and supplementing their allowance (illegally of course) or sometimes they are a keen DIY’er who work in another field, such as the fire service (good with ladders!), on leave from HM armed forces, or they may be a student.

Dont let cowboy builders near your home!

Sometimes we are surprised and they do a fairly good job, but like with most things, you take your chances with these people and of course if you are paying cash in their pocket, you wont get any guarantee or come back if things go wrong.

3. Specialist or artistic painters (for murals or trompe l’oeil)

These types of people often DO know what they are doing, but are generally not someone to be called on to carry out a simple painting job of a terraced house for example.

Due to often the exclusive nature of some artists and related services, these people often work on special commissions or on delicate buildings.

Their services are rarely cheap and you should only employ them if you specifically wish for a mural or some other form of artwork on your home.

NOTE: Any mural should be ideally protected with a clear wall sealer to prevent the art from fading or the paint cracking.

Anti graffiti coatings are also sometimes used on this type of project.

4. Professional painting and decorating contractors.

When you contact a professional painting and decorating company, in many cases, they will send a surveyor around to cost the work, write a proper schedule of works, specify paint and repairs required etc. and carry out the job often with the minimum fuss.

Sounds good doesn’t it? But of course these companies are not cheap and in many cases we have quoted the same or only marginally more than a professional painter for a much longer lasting job. I will leave that decision with you!

5. Exterior Wall Coating specialists.

This is of course our field of work so forgive me for being slightly biased. 🙂

We differ from normal painters insofar as yes we do the same as the above, we survey the house properly, note areas of repair required etc etc, cost the job exactly instead of a rough guess, and we only use the best paints and coatings money can buy.

Why? because after we do the exterior wall coating work on a house, the paint finish outside will not need to be attended to for at least 15 years, and in some cases 20 years. How?

Our exterior wall coatings are far superior to masonry paint because they last longer, do not need maintenance, they dont fade, they dont crack, they protect the wall underneath, and crucially, they also stop penetrating damp!

All this and more, with a 15 year warranty!

So as you can see, weighing up the different options, having your home painted ONCE in 20 years with a NEVER PAINT AGAIN Wall coating, regardless of the fact that initially it costs a bit more, is far less hassle and far less cost overall, than having someone do it each year or every other year.

In addition, having a spray applied wall coating brings many benefits to both the house itself, and its occupants.
