Rendering and painting a brick house in Lincolnshire

Here is another example of a house (in Lincolnshire) which was constructed with unpainted bricks which over time had become loose and brittle, requiring immediate action to protect the walls with a render coating.

A House Render is an external wall covering which is applied by hand, to protect the bricks or blocks from which the building is constructed from and is normally covered with paint or a wall coatings to protect the render surface from cracks or erosion.

This article, and especially the images below (which will EXPAND when you click one each one), show the process we carried out in rendering the walls of the house, and then adding further protection by applying a coat of Weatherproof exterior wall coatings in a fine grade texture.

This particular house had bricks in very poor condition and, as the house had been extended several times over the years, there was a lot of mis-matched bricks of various grades across the house.

Not only did the house need protection, but it also needed a clean and uniform finish.

House Render Wall Coatings

As you can see from the image of the front of the house BEFORE we started, it looks like at one point this building was used for something else such as a post office or shop judging on the large lintel sticking out of the wall to the left of the house.

Because of this, and the other factors associated with the various brick textures and ages, the whole house looked a bit scruffy and getting someone in to give it a “lick of paint” clearly wasn’t an option in this case. Something more robust and durable was needed………

In April 2011 we got to work. This job took about a week and half and very little disruption was caused to the occupants during these major render works.

We applied a generous scratch coat of render to the house, then applied a smooth top coat of flexible render on top of this, then applied a primer, and then finally spray applied an Andura NEVER PAINT AGAIN wall coating, in white.

This property is now maintenance free and will still look this good in 20 years time!
