This large 1920’s house in Hampshire had stood the test of time well but the owners contacted us to carry out repairs and give the place a new, fresher brighter look!
This imposing house in Horndean, Hants., had been built in the 1920’s and was covered with faced brick to the lower part of the house, and a coarse pebbledash finish to the upper floor, augmented by mock Tudor beams to the front.
This spacious property also enjoyed a large conservatory at the rear and a great aspect to the front of the house.
The problem was that the weather had taken its toll on the house and much of the stones in the pebbledash had fallen off over time, the mock Tudor beams were rotting, and the mortar joints round the bricks were loose in places.
Despite this, the house was well built originally and structurally sound, and therefore most of the work here was cosmetic although much of the wood at the front had to be replaced, which we do as part of our service anyway.
This was the front of the house before we started, with the awful pebbledash.
The job was far too much hassle for your normal painter and decorator in the Hampshire area, so the company contacted the Never Paint Again website, and after an initial chat on the phone, a date was set for a site visit.
The side pebbledash had worn away with cracks and bald patches
Our surveyor arrived on the dot, and was able to have a very nice chat with the delightful owners of this period house, and quickly ascertained what it was they wanted us to do!
After a brief survey of the house, measuring up the wall area, taking photos and calculations, hammer testing the wall for blown pebbledash by tapping it very lightly, noting missing pointing or loose brick mortar joints, and then sitting down (for quite a while!) and doing the maths!
We also had to take the conservatory into consideration
The owners were then presented with a fixed price, in writing, with no extra charges and NO HIDDEN EXTRAS and very importantly, no obligation and no pressure whatsoever!
A month later our men turned up and got to work.
So we got to work on the walls, preparing them for painting
Here is a shot of the side, and yes the weather was a bit better once we had started, and this shows us masking up the building and then applying a cement latex bonded slurry to seal the walls and to prevent further pebble loss.
The photos show the various stages involved in the application of an NPA exterior wall coating to this pebbledashed house, including the repairs, the masking up of windows (and the lower brick work in this case), the “bagging” coat (a special mix of sand and cement bonding slurry).
Spraying pebbledash is far easier and quicker than painting such a rough textured surface.
We carried out all the repairs to the walls and recreated some of the pebbledash where it had fallen off and left bald spots.
We used a tyrolean cement spraying tool to achieve this.
We then masked up the doors and windows and laid dustsheets in the ground to minimise any mess.
We also had to cover the mock Tudor beams with masking tape, and once the job was finished, these were hand painted.

Also the photo above shows the waterproof primer stage, in readiness for the spray application of the top coating of a weather resistant exterior textured wall coating.
The house will look this good for at least the next 20 years so no more painting!

Before the work was due to commence, and when the total price was agreed in writing, some very simple and jargon free paperwork was completed, and then the owners did not have to pay a penny, until the job was finished, which as it turned out, was in just under a week!
