What sort of work does NPA normally carry out?
Welcome to NEVER PAINT AGAIN™, the original internet supplier of high performance masonry paints and spray applied exterior wall coating services throughout the UK. If you are considering having the outside of your house decorated, or maybe repaired as well, then NPA can carry out a whole range of services as part of our well-known exterior refurbishments, but what work does NPA typically undertake?
When one of NPA’s authorised dealers carries out work on your home, more often than not, they will have several areas of remedial or repair work to carry out, before they apply a thick weatherproofing coat of NPA exterior wall coating, but what exactly do they do?
NPA carries out repairs to pebbledash exterior walls.
Pebbledash comes and goes with fashion, and it suits some properties, but looks quite hideous on others. Don’t forget there are TWO main types of pebbledash, the other one being Spar dash, which is small chips of flint or similar, instead of pebbles. This spar dash is commonly mistaken for pebbledash, but is a cheaper and less effective option, and is much coarser, so be warned when walking past one of these walls, as brushing against it accidentally can REALLY hurt. (the editor of NPA has several scars across his knuckles and backs of his hands to testify that fact!)
We have many years experience with working with this roughcast exterior wall finish and can make the walls smoother, or smooth if desired. When our teams start work, they search out cracks and defects by meticulously tapping each section of the wall with a small hammer. When the hammer makes a hollow sound, we know we have found pebbledash that has come “unstuck” from the wall behind it.
This creates a small “void” or gap in-between the wall and the pebbledash. Now, that doesn’t sound so drastic, however water can, and will, build up in this void. When the weather turns colder, a common occurrence here in England (!), the water in that void freezes. When water is frozen, it expands, and of course, pushes the loose or hollow pebbledash, further away from the wall, and of course, makes more loose pebble dash than was there before.
This can get worse and worse if not treated, and will eventually fall off, and we have seen this happen before, so don’t leave it until its too late! One the wall is made sound and secure, we treat it, like all walls surfaces, with a powerful fungus and mould treatment to prevent green coming back, then we mask up the doors and windows, cover the plants etc, and apply a coat of latex bonded render, also known as “bagging”.
Then a coat of weatherproof primer is applied, and then the NPA exterior wall coating system is sprayed on, in a choice of colours, the house is de-masked, and we clean up and finish! Voila! One great looking property!
NPA does professional repairs to rendered walls.
Many of the houses we have wallcoated over the past few years have been of the traditional smooth render variety. One of the problems with smooth rendered exterior walls is the fact the wall finish cannot be left untreated (bare render, usually grey or light brown depending on what mix was used to apply the wall surface). In most cases rendered walls have to be painted, but that’s when the problems arise!
Most normal exterior wall paints, even the best brands, tend to last for 2 years maximum and cheaper varieties of paint can last even less than that, 1 year at the most!

Well, you can sleep easy now, knowing that NPA can repair and apply our specialist coloured wallcoating to the outside walls, which comes in a variety of subtle and stylish paint colours and does not chip, flake, peel or fade, and that’s covered by a guarantee for 15 years!
We carry out all repairs to the wall surface, such as fixing cracks, removing and replacing hollow or broken render, remove flaky paint and mould, mask up the windows etc, and then we hand apply a smooth water proof primer paint. This acts as a key for our top coat, which is applied by a specialist spray machine, straight onto the wall is up to 20 times the thickness of normal paints!
Once it’s done, it’s done for good; you need never paint the outside of your house again! We can apply various grades of texture coating, or smooth exterior coatings too. Whatever look you want, we can provide it for you!
NPA also does professional repairs to brick, block or stone exterior walls.
Over the last few years NPA have also completed various projects, both large and small, to buildings with brick or stone exterior walls. This situation can be approached in 2 ways.
a) We can repair, re-point flaking, loose and spalling mortar joints around the stones or bricks, and apply our clear silicone wallcoating, which makes the wall totally damp free, but does not change the appearance of the house. This is quite useful for historic buildings or stone cottages. This is also suitable for listed buildings (subject to survey and permissions)
b) We can repair and repoint your exterior stone or brick outside wall, and apply our coloured exterior Never paint again wallcoatings to the exterior wall substrate. Your surveyor would run through the differences in systems with you and advise of the best option. The clear coating service is much cheaper to buy than the coloured coatings, but this method is only usually suitable for buildings in fairly good condition.
We also get asked for concrete paint, stucco painting, advice on textured walls, masonry paint (sometimes mistakenly spelt as MASONARY PAINT), lime rendering, sand and cement rendering, painting tyrolean, exterior latex paints, elastomeric paints, exterior waterproof paints and so on. If in doubt, just ask.

NPA carries out repairs to tyrolean exterior wall surfaces.
Tyrolean covered walls are textured in appearance and Tyrolean is a cement based textured exterior wallcoating which is hand applied using a tool called a tyrolean gun.
A tyrolean gun isn’t actually a gun, but is a special bucket with a spindle in the middle which looks rather like a hairbrush. When a cement mixture is introduced into the tyrolean gun, the handle is turned by the operator which turns the hairbrush-like spiked cylinder, which subsequently picks up the cement mixture, and is then flicked onto the exterior wall surface in small splats. The tyrolean mixture sometimes has unibond PVA added to it for better adhesion to the exterior wall. The tool is hand operated and can be very exhausting to use all day! There are air and electric powered versions available, however nothing beats the old method of doing it and NPA strives to use a mixture of traditional building skills, and modern technology, to create a fantastic and long life transformation of any home, usually within the space of a week!
This is repeated constantly until a desired cement texture is achieved on the wall. It is very difficult to achieve good results on this method without fine warm weather and a highly skilled operative coating a well prepared wall. It can be applied as a cement colour or it can be coloured with the addition of an “admixture”, which is a coloured dye for the water in the mix. It is brittle, often quite short term, provides no protection against the weather and often finishes patchy.
Traditional tyrolean exterior wall surfaces often crack and in many cases, as the tyrolean wall coating applied is so thin & brittle, it falls off. We mean Literally: falls off.
NPA removes all unsound and suspect tyrolean, and replaces the surface to match, before applying a cement bonding mixture, a coat of water resistant paint primer, and then we spray apply our exterior wall coating to the wall.
NPA Damp proofing and damp courses (DPC)
NPA insists of the highest standards of work. In most but not all cases, it is not advisable, in applying a textured coating to a wall that does not have a damp course. Exterior wallcoatings protect your home against the weather and against penetrating damp, but not rising damp, we have to install a DPC before we continue working on the house.
A chemical DPC is an injected fluid that is pushed into the wall at several locations, via a series of drilled holes at regular intervals along the lower section of the wall, usually about 5 inches from the ground.
When this chemical is injected into the wall, it then settles as to form a DPC within the brick or blocks of the wall, and stops damp rising. NOTE: We do not ONLY do DPC work, we only do it as part of a wider programme of works.
NPA can also install a new door or window if required.
If you are having work done by us to your home, there could be nothing worse than having to call in more builders to do more work, after we have left! Our aim is to drive away after finishing the job, and you not having to lift a finger again on exterior house maintenance! If you have a bricked up doorway or window, we can match that in to the new wall surface, or if you have, for example, a rotten wooden window, we can often replace this at cost price, as part of the deal. Please ask your surveyor for advice when he or she calls. (NOTE: The above is subject to availability)

Whilst we take great care in masking up your pipes, sometimes we get asked to replace the lot with new UPVC ones, when we are working on your walls. That is not a problem, although if you require this service, you MUST tell us when placing your order, so that we may order the materials required. There is a charge made for this, which can be priced into any agreement we make with you. NOTE: We only offer this if you are having us do your walls, we do not offer replacement upvc as a standalone service. Thank you)
