some of the walls have been painted with gloss paint
Hi thanks for your email but I’m afraid we dont operate a free DIY advice line, sorry!!!!!! However……….
We are contractors who provide specialist exterior painting services, however i will still try and answer you query as best as i can.
Gloss paint should NOT be or have been, used to paint walls!
Gloss paint is quite a hardwearing paint and is usually used for doors, door frames, skirting boards and painting things like exterior woodwork, and without seeing the wall in question, its difficult to suggest something, therefore i will be posting this on our blog (minus your name and location of course), and if anyone replies with a better suggestion, i am happy to email that over to you, hope that’s ok?
In most cases, gloss paint has a shiny and smooth finish so getting another coat of paint to stick on top could be tricky. I would suggest you locate your nearest trade paint supplier (you should be able to find that in the Yellow pages) and you would need to prepare the wall before paint is applied.
Is it possible to remove the gloss paint from the wall? If so, that would be your best and possibly cheapest option. This can be achieved via chemical paint stripper, a scraper and/or a heat gun but great care should be taken when using this method.
Alternatively, and without going to look at a paint database for you, which takes lots of time, there should be something you could apply to the wall before any paint goes onto the wall, a solution commonly called a “stabiliser”, and then a coat of primer AND THEN TWO COATS of emulsion. That should do the trick, but i dont think it would be easy either way as mentioned above, gloss should not be painted onto interior walls!
Best of luck with your project though and let me know how you get on
