A visitor from the USA asks us about masonry wall coatings
Although we are based in the UK, we often get questions from our friends in the USA, related to exterior coatings, damp proofing, drywall and so on……..……..Although in most cases, if someone from America asks us a question or requests a quote to have their house painted, there’s not much we can do apart from signpost them to someone who may be able to help them. Here’s a question posed to us from Walt Magen of Mercer county, New Jersey.
Although we cant help him, if YOU can suggest a company in the USA who could help Walt, please let us know…………

thanks for your posting, its very helpful cheers! What would i suggest for your issues? Its tricky without seeing the place in person but my advice would be to find out EXACTLY the cause of the damp, i.e. where the rainwater is coming in, floor level or maybe above? Are there any damp water stains, if so, where? If they are by the ground, it could be that they did not install a DPC damp proof course, a problem which can be rectified by injecting a chemical into the lower part of the wall?
Please feel free to give me some more info……
Walt’s problem sounds familiar. I had an industrial unit built about two years ago with a breeze block cavity wall. Ever since the “builders” (I use the term loosely) departed rainwater has been coming through, which is worse on the lower part of the wall, which measures approx 160 foot long x 18 foot high. I think the problem is due to sloppy construction, the builders leaving the ties dirty with excess mortar. I start off using Dulux Weathershield but stopped when advised by one of my customers (a painter) told me I was wasting my time and money! As half the wall is now painted with Weathershield and the rest is bare breeze block, what would you suggest to cure the problem once and for all?
